July Authors Meeting + Call for Books about AI
Hello! Here are the details for today’s meeting:
Authors’ Meeting July
Thursday, July 25 · 5:00PM PST/6 MST/ 7 CST / 8 EST

I thought we’d try something different. In a recent post, I talked about the meaning, purpose, value, delivery, or message of your book. What does the reader gain from reading your book, other than information? So, for this next meeting, as we’re doing introductions, let’s each answer that question rather than our typical “what was your goal from last month, did you achieve it, and what is your goal for next month.”
Here’s my answer for an example: “My book is called Carcass: On the Afterlives of Animal Bodies and the value is challenging our disgust with animal remains and inspiring readers to appreciate their prevalent roles in nature, industry, and personal connection.” You can write yours down in advance if you want.
Other notes:
Writing a book about AI?
The University of California Press is accepting submissions for books about AI. If you match what they’re looking for, I might pitch them/get your agent to pitch them, but you may still want to consider other publishers and see who matches what you want the most.
Yes, it’s legal to resell physical, non-counterfeit books in the USA.
Just because I’ve seen some misinformation floating around the book world: yes, reselling physical books is legally protected in the US. So long as it’s a legit and not counterfeit copy.
The right to resell physical copies of non-counterfeit copyrighted media is spelled out in the First Sale Doctrine of US copyright law. If you heard that someone got in trouble for reselling, they were probably breaking a different law at the same time, or just violating a TOS.
