January Notes + February Meeting
Recording, Hiring a Science Advisor, and Why You Should Jump on Opportunities ASAP
Hello everyone!
Thanks for joining us in January. Here is the recording and transcription of the meeting, thanks to Otter.*
Next Meeting:
ANBIP Authors Meeting
Sunday, February 25 · 5:00pm PST, 6 Mountain, 7 Central, 8 EST
We discussed:
Our goals for the year, rather than the month. (Mine is to finish the book and start on my next project, which might be a photo book or something else!)
Getting into the circuit of getting paid (and getting paid very well!) to speak at events
Issues with potentially selling your book to be translated and sold by companies in politically contentious countries
I recommended the Wyoming Innovation Partnership’s program, Investing in Wyoming’s Creative Economy. I know there are maybe two members of this group other than me in Wyoming, but if that’s you, apply ASAP because it’s amazing free money.
Your state may have something similar, giving free money to artists, but this program is brand new in Wyoming, so, IDK how many other states do this stuff, nor can I guarantee that this program will ever happen again. I noticed that the really amazing fellowship I did a few years ago hasn’t opened up its applications for this year when I think it should have done so in November or December. I think that one has just run out of money or ceased to exist. Programs close all the time. Don’t count on “there’s always next year” because there often isn’t.
More Resources
Finding and hiring science advisors
Since my next task is to send my chapters to science advisors (as stipulated, and paid for, by the Sloan Foundation), I made a document regarding how I did it. If and when you hire science advisors, this document might help!
How to Start a Book
A very successful science writer and author, Ed Yong, posted about how he starts book projects and how he decides what to cover. For anyone at the beginning of a book project, or thinking about doing another.
*I’m interested in your feedback regarding whether I should share the recordings of the meetings, or if you prefer that what happens in the meetings stays in the meetings. Sometimes we can get a little more candid in a private space. If you want, I can go back and private the link, just let me know ASAP.
Thanks, everyone! See you on the 25th!
